The Chicago Cubs re-signed relief pitcher Trevor Cahill to a one-year, $4.25 million contract on Monday, per Buster Olney of ESPN.com. Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com confirmed the report, adding the deal is pending a physical.  

In the days leading up to the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, the Houston Astros and Cincinnati Reds discussed a blockbuster deal that would have sent both Johnny Cueto and Aroldis Chapman to the Astros.

The St. Louis Cardinals announced Monday they signed free-agent catcher Brayan Pena to a two-year contract. According to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Pena's contract is worth $5 million.
