Who Watches the Watchmen?: Casting the Movie, MLB Style

Everyone who has had the good fortune to read Alan Moore's "Watchmen" knows that it is one of the greatest literary works of all time. Entertainment Weekly called it the 13th-best book since 1983. Time Magazine called it one of the 100 best novels since 1923. "Watchmen" is the only comic to appear on either list. What makes "Watchmen" special is its incredibly complex characters. Most of the so-called superheroes have no actual powers. They are human, with regular human flaws and weaknesses, albeit somewhat exaggerated because of their circumstances.

An MLB Infield's Greatest Offensive Season

The 1950 Boston Red Sox infield produced one of the greatest offensive seasons in baseball history, but let's get one thing straight.

The Boston infield of Walt Dropo at first base, Bobby Doerr at second base, Johnny Pesky at third base, and Vern Stephens at shortstop was not the greatest infield of all time. But for one season, the unit was unrivaled as a hitting machine.

No infield has ever matched its production.

Phillies-Dodgers: Philly Destroys L.A., 10-4, Heads Back to World Series

Like I said last week, if Chase Utley doesn’t beat you, then Ryan Howard will. If Howard doesn’t beat you, then Raul Ibanez will. And if none of those guys beat you, Jayson Werth will.
Last night, Werth smacked two HRs and drove in four runs as the Philadelphia Phillies destroyed the Los Angeles Dodgers, 10-4, to advance to their second straight World Series.

At some point I am going to realize that I shouldn’t keep betting against the Phillies.

Examining Boog Powell's Longtime Record Philly Chase Utley Just Reached

Chase Utley tied Boog Powell's record on Wednesday for most consecutive postseason games reaching base. Utley walked in the first inning of the Phillies' NLCS clinching 10-4 victory over the Dodgers to reach base for the 25th consecutive playoff game, equaling the record Powell held alone for 38 years.

Boog established the original mark before there was even a League Championship Series much less a Division Series.

Steve Phillips's Mistress Can Go to Hell

For those that don't know, Steve Phillips the former Mets GM and current ESPN analysis has been caught in a love affair with an ESPN employee. Well maybe not caught, perhaps outed is a better phrase. His mistress went public with the affair and not just to the Phillips' family, but she felt the need to inform the New York Post in an exclusive deal.

Fantasy Baseball Match-Up: Ryan Doumit vs. Miguel Montero

Who is the fourth best catcher in baseball heading into 2010 (click here to see our initial rankings for 2010)?  Is it Ryan Doumit, who was limited to just 75 games in 2009 due to a wrist injury?  What about Miguel Montero, who seemingly came from nowhere to emerge as one of the better hitting catchers in the game?  Let’s take a look:

For Phillies, It's Deja Vu All Over Again

In the end, it was a lot like 2008, when the Phillies beat the Dodgers in five games.

Once again, Dodgers closer Jonathan Broxton stared down Matt Stairs in Game Four and blinked. He walked Stairs on four pitches.

A Case for Bobby Valentine Heading the Cleveland Indians

Chiba Lotte's fans wanted Bobby Valentine back in Japan for yet another year. Chiba Lotte management didn't want to pay him.

I don't know what budget the Marines are on, but surely an MLB team, even one as cash-strapped as Cleveland, could afford Valentine's asking price.

In Mark Shapiro's quest to hire a new manager, he has said that money won't be an issue. However does that mean money won't be an issue because they won't think of hiring someone that costs a pretty penny or they would shell out the cash for the right guy?

Chicago Cubs Sign Rudy Jaramillo, My Christmas Comes Early

Sigh. After the lost season for the Cubs, I could have easily stayed away until the organizational meetings next month. But when someone delivers you a gift, such as the Cubs in signing Rudy Jaramillo to serve as the new hitting instructor, you're obligated to say "Thank you!"

Top 10 Dodgers-Phillies Game Five Questions

10) Was the TBS crew contractually unable to mention that the fans were chanting "You Took Steroids" and "Hit the Showers" at Manny Ramirez?

9) Is it really worth a tongue-lashing from the people inside your television if you are lacking avocado, or should we just move straight to capital punishment?

8) Will the Phillies throw at the Dodgers in their first game against them in 2010 for all of the hit batsmen in Wednesday's clinching game?
