Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel reminded everyone that his club’s opening day loss was just one game. So did Yankees skipper Joe Girardi after dropping his own first stanza to the O’s. And at least one of Girardi’s own superstars knows full well that an auspicious start to the season can’t hold a candle to a spectacular finish.

Nick Adenhart, pitcher for the Los Angeles Angels, was killed in a tragic three-car crash in California early Thursday morning. 

The driver of the vehicle that caused the crash has been arrested and will face charges of manslaughter, felony driving under the influence, and hit-and-run.

Only hours before the tragic incident, Adenhart made his first start of the season for the Angels.  He pitched six scoreless innings.

The 2009 MLB season has a few games under it's belt. Some pretty exciting things have happened already, such as the Braves hitting eight home runs in three games, and the New York Yankees starting out 0-2. However, today the season turned sad.

Nick Adenhart, 22, a rookie Angels pitcher, died in a car accident early this morning.

Following the New York Yankees' opening day loss to the Orioles, the Yankee squad heard about it.

Three people—including Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart—were killed and another person was seriously injured at an intersection in Fullerton, Calif., early this morning in a three-vehicle crash that authorities said was caused by a motorist who ran a red light.

After the Orioles opening day thumping of the Yankees, most expected the Birds to be violently brought back down to earth. Instead, the Yanks bats were quieted for five masterful innings by the O's #2 pitcher, import Koji Uehara. Just as the Orioles learned many valuable lessons on Opening Day, they learned a few more things about how their 2009 season might turn out, on Day Two.

Billy Wagner is working hard in Port St Lucie Florida getting ready to become activated on the Mets roster in either late July or early August after having Tommy John elbow surgery last season.  Wagner was originally not anticipated to be activated until at least late August.

The Mets' bullpen woes, especially the lack of a reliable closer last year, prompted Omar Minaya to acquire both a closer in K-Rod and a set up man in JJ Putz.  The Mets had 29 blown saves in 2008, which were pivotal in making sure that they did not reach the postseason.

Tragic News from Anaheim this morning. Nick Adenhart was pronounced dead after a hit and run following the game last night.

He was driving home with three others in his Mitsubishi when a driver in a white van ran a red light and struck Adenhart's vehicle, causing it to slam into a light pole. Two of the passengers died instantly while the other died in the hospital.

The driver of the van fled the scene but it has been reported that the driver was apprehended by police this morning.

Truly sad news out of Major League Baseball this morning.
