Trevor Cahill Reportedly Re-Signs with Cubs

Buster Olney of ESPN reported Cahill's agreement with the Cubs, adding the pitcher "enjoyed his experience" with the team.

For years, the New York Yankees won the winter the traditional way.

They bought it.

The 2015 MLB free-agent pitching class is rich. As in, loaded with talent.

Now, it's rich in another way. As in, drowning in dollars.

Los Angeles Dodgers fans are no doubt still reeling from the loss of Zack Greinke, one half of their dominant pair of aces.

Now, it's time to swallow an undeniable truth: This is life under president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman, who has demonstrated in word and deed his aversion to massive, long-term contracts. 

Every team enters MLB's annual winter meetings with a wish list. No one has addressed every need and shored up every weakness, be it a buyer or seller.

But as players, agents, general managers and the media descend on Nashville's Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center beginning Sunday, some clubs will be hungrier than others. Some, in fact, will be downright famished.

Major League Baseball's annual offseason extravaganza known as the winter meetings will begin Monday in Nashville, Tennessee, with all 30 teams seeking to upgrade their roster for 2016 and beyond through trades and/or free-agent signings. 

The San Francisco Giants did not land their man. 

The 2015 Major League Baseball winter meetings have yet to start, but it's already obvious that this will be one of the craziest and least predictable offseasons in years. 

Zack Greinke provided the biggest jolt so far this winter, agreeing to a deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.

What was once a sputtering offseason jump-started into high gear over the last week.

Two blockbuster free-agent signings are now in the books since Sunday. Jordan Zimmermann’s agreement with the Detroit Tigers whet the appetite and David Price’s monster deal with the Boston Red Sox put the rest of the market in a post-Thanksgiving contract coma.

There's still an awful lot of winter between now and spring training. So, suffice it to say we don't know all there is to know about the 2015-16 Major League Baseball offseason just yet. 

But after a month or so of trade and free-agent activity, we do know a bit. A few trends have surfaced, and they give us a sense for how the rest of the offseason will play out.
