We are T-minus six days from Opening Day of the 2011 MLB season. The first official pitch will be thrown by Justin Verlander of the Detroit Tigers in Yankee Stadium.

It's a great time of the year.

I used to have to sleep with a baseball in my hand around this time of year when I played coach-pitch ball. Now, I just get the itch to scour online ticket vendors for cheap seats to great games.

Opening Day 2011 is less than a week away, and the Washington Nationals have yet to officially name their starting center fielder. Unofficially, the Washington Post is reporting that Rick Ankeil will get the nod, essentially banishing Nyjer Morgan to Syracuse to start the season.

Joe Saunders, the man who wept when he was traded to the Diamondbacks, has made fans weep this entire spring, and last night was the biggest cry-fest of all.  In a game that Saunders needed to pitch well he fell flat. 

After being inconspicuously omitted when Kirk Gibson was naming the starters earlier in the week the pressure was on Saunders to have a quality outing and show that he deserves to be one of the five.

With pain in his right shoulder, closer Brad Lidge will start the 2011 season on the disabled list.  With Lidge's long history of injuries, this new issue should be a huge red light to the Phillies that Lidge's time is close to being over.

Carlos Beltran took part in a simulated game on a back field in Port St Lucie, Florida on Thursday. He hit from both sides of the plate, ran the bases without hesitation and fielded his position with what he later described as 100 percent intensity.

Almost as soon as the season ended, the Yankees made the decision on Jorge Posada: He would not catch in 2011.

I don't even think he was allowed to bring a glove to spring training.

It was assumed that this would open the door for top catching prospect, Jesus Montero, to become the Yankees every day catcher.

Replacing Posada wouldn't be easy, but for a team labeled as "old," a youth movement would be a good thing.

Looking at the way this team is shaping up for the 2011 season, I’d put my money on the Phillies being cursed… here’s why.

Tell me you haven't heard this one before: Philadelphia Phillies' closer Brad Lidge is likely to spend Opening Day and the 14 days thereafter on the Disabled List.

After several offseasons filled with surgeries and rehabilitation for Lidge, he and the Phillies' fan base were overly optimistic of a full, healthy season from the once perfect closer.

Dear Mr. Wren,

I had a toy when I was a kid, perhaps you had one just like it. It was an octagon-shaped toy with various different shaped holes on it that you would put plastic blocks into to help you learn shapes.

Looking back on it now, this toy was a lot like building a successful ball club. You have all these pieces available to you, but each hole would only accept one block so you have to make the right decisions.

The 2011 Opening Day lineup is out, and it's a little surprising.
