Baltimore Orioles Rally Falls Short as Boston Red Sox Prevail, 4-3

Red Sox southpaw Jon Lester pitched 5.2 shutout innings this evening, but his bullpen allowed two runs in the seventh inning and another in the eighth as the visiting Baltimore Orioles tied the game, thereby leaving the lefty with only a no-decision to show for his efforts.

But the Sox scored in the bottom of the frame courtesy of a bases-loaded walk to Adrian Beltre, and they went on to win the ballgame, 4-3, in front of 37,367 fans at Fenway Park.

5 Hot Fantasy Baseball Free Agents With Play Or Trade Value

Always afraid to release your drafted stars whose weak performances are killing your fantasy squad, you risk missing out on some early-season hot up-and-comers that could make or break your team.

Remember this: in fantasy, you need to play it week by week, and you need to take advantage of the fact that your players aren’t “real.”

In the real world players demand and possess no-trade clauses, so Theo Epstein and Brian Cashman can’t run around signing free agents and immediately packaging them for positional or rotational upgrades.

In fantasy, you can, and you must.

Cincinnati Reds: Another Take on the Joe Morgan Hiring

Cincinnati, whether deserved or undeserved, has long held a reputation of racist city.

And no, that's not a photo of Joe Morgan giving a "black power" fist. He's waving.

But the photo looked silly after trying to crop it down and get the wave into the shot.

Having never lived in Cincinnati, it's tough to properly judge.

Just a hunch, but most whites would probably deny it, blacks would agree that the city has serious issues regarding racism.

Jeff Mathis' Wrist a Bad Break for Angels, an Opportunity for Napoli

As the 2010 NFL Draft gives way to a young baseball season, it's already clear the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim won't have to address at least one position at the MLB's own upcoming draft: catcher.

Rising star prospects Bobby Wilson and Hank Conger currently support the dual threat of Mike Napoli and Jeff Mathis at the major league level.

The problem is, although the Angels have an embarrassment of riches in terms of options behind the plate, each is a poor substitute for a legitimate everyday starter.

Jason Varitek: The Captain at the Helm Makes a Difference

Is it me or does the game feel different when the Captain is behind the plate?

I will not argue with anyone that says Jason Varitek is near the end of his career.  I will not argue with anyone that says he needs to be the backup catcher. But after the start of this season, I must argue with anyone who doesn't agree that the game has a different tone when the Captain is at the Helm.

MLB: Milton Bradley to the Chicago Media: "God Bless Seattle"

On his way out of Chicago, Milton Bradley burned a number of bridges.

When asked about his lackluster season with the Chicago Cubs, Bradley didn’t refrain from playing the blame game. He blamed the coaching staff, the media and the fans for an unprecedented level of expectations and pressure.

Fantasy Baseball: Week Three Pickups

Early season slumps are starting to become more concerning by the day.  Teams that have a group of these players need to start taking action until things fall back into place.  Using Yahoo!'s owned percentage, let's take a look at some players that might be available for a quick fix.

Kelly Johnson, 2B - Johnson hasn't hit a home run since April 11th, but he's not a big power guy anyway.  The real plus is that Johnson continues to hit for AVG and display improved plate discipline.&nbs

Major League Baseball News and Notes (April 23)

Greetings from the Bally’s Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, NV. Since I am on a business trip and my time is limited, I thought I would group a couple of posts into one.

By the way, if you want to feel better about yourself, just walk around in the Bally’s casino at around 8 o'clock in the morning. It’s not a pretty place.

Let’s see what is going on around the majors.

Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier: Shades of Mark McGwire and Jose Canseco

When watching the Los Angeles Dodgers' Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier, shades of past glory in California come shining through.

Remember the days of Mark McGwire and Jose Canseco in Oakland? I don't...I was born in the 80's, but I've seen the footage.

Just watching two players electrify a crowd like McGwire and Canseco did draws parallels to today in Chavez Ravine. Add to the beat Silver Slugger Awards for two-thirds of the Dodgers outfield, and the stage is set for a new slugger-duo dynasty.
