Buster Olney of ESPN reported on the two NL West clubs, saying they "checked in on his availability."

The AL and NL Most Valuable Player awards will be announced on Thursday night, capping off award season around Major League Baseball.

While there is some debate as to who deserves the AL honor between Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson and Los Angeles Angels center fielder Mike Trout, there is little question who should be taking home the trophy on the NL side of things.

Despite a disappointing overall season from the Washington Nationals, right fielder Bryce Harper was an absolute beast, taking his offensive game to another level in his age-22 season.

Buckle up, folks. For if the first two weeks of baseball's offseason are any indication, the Hot Stove League is going to take us on a long, strange trip this winter.

Trades, and not free-agent signings, have dominated both the rumor mill and transaction sheets, which is certainly surprising when you consider the slew of high-profile names that are currently unsigned. Then again, we are still very early in the offseason. Things are sure to pick up from here on both fronts.

One year ago, the air around Chris Davis was purely negative. 

That headline sounds absurd, doesn't it? The guy already has three All-Star appearances, two postseason appearances, 97 major league home runs and a DVR full of knock-your-breath-away highlight clips.

Seriously, you need more Bryce Harper hype right now probably only slightly more than you need an IRS audit.

So, here's something you may not be aware of: Major League Baseball's award season does not actually end with the naming of the Most Valuable Players on Thursday.

Nope. Not anymore. On Friday evening, baseball will take a page out of Monty Python and try something completely different with the MLB Esurance Awards.

The long wait to find out the baseball writers' choice for Most Valuable Player in the American League and the National League ends Thursday, though a scan of the numbers and narratives that often accompany this award has left little drama to unpack.   

Of course, there are surprises from time to time. Justin Verlander certainly wasn't a consensus pick in 2011, but the Detroit Tigers' right-hander became the first pitcher since 1992 to capture the honor. 

From Zack Greinke to David Price, the MLB free-agent market is flooded with impact starters.

That's great news for big league general managers because revamping the rotation is the most pressing need for an array of teams across the league.

There's also an assortment of squads whose top offseason objective is to land that late-inning ace. As it so happens, there's plenty of prominent relievers up for grabs on the trade block.

Free-agent pitcher Doug Fister saw a down 2015 season with the Washington Nationals have him removed from the starting rotation and into the bullpen. This offseason, he is looking for a new team.
