Padres-Mariners: Mat Latos Shines Again, San Diego Bats Show Life in Seattle

Not only is Mat Latos living up to high expectations, he is also quickly becoming the Padres' most efficient and effective starting pitcher.

Latos outdueled Seattle Mariners ace Felix Hernandez, whose solid outing wasn't enough to derail Latos and the Padres' belated bats.

Latos (4-3) allowed a run and four hits over six innings while striking out six as the Padres beat the Seattle Mariners 8-1 on Sunday before a crowd of 33,315.

New York Mets Pitching Smokes Yankee Bats in Game Two: Great Game, Tough Season

It's difficult to get excited about the Mets these days, and I'm not going to take the bait of a single great night of baseball and build it into a fantasy about how good this team may be. But after tonight's win against the Yankees, it's cerainly seems possible to get really excited about what we saw from Mike Pelfrey, Mejia, and KRod.

David Wright, Jason Bay Lead New York Mets Past New York Yankees

It was a breakout game in many ways for the "core" Mets players on offense.

Behind Mike Pelfrey's strong outing of six innings, one run, six hits, and five strikeouts, were Jason Bay getting four hits and David Wright getting two RBI singles.

Phil Hughes was on the mound for the Yankees, and for the second consecutive outing he struggled.

Fantasy Baseball Box Score Breakouts, May 21, 2010

Here’s a look at the unheralded players who played well yesterday.

New York-New York: Mets Offense Flat In Opening Loss to Yankees

NEW YORK--The Mets couldn't get anything done against Yankees starter Javier Vazquez in the opener of the Subway Series.

They did get a great effort out of Hisanori Takahashi, who was filling in for the injured Jon Niese. Takahashi, in his first Major League outing, went six innings, allowing zero runs on only five hits, and he struck out five.

He got out of two major jams in the third and fourth innings, when the Yankees had runners at second and third with one out, each time.

New York Yankees-New York Mets: Pitchers' Duel Results in 2-1 Yanks Win

I have to admit that I was shocked that Hisanori Takahashi had a great start, going 6 six innings. I never would have expected that out of him. He was really outstanding, especially considering that he got no run support.

Fantasy Baseball Around the Majors, May 20: Kershaw, Zobrist, and More

Ben Zobrist finally went deep.  The same could be said about Troy Tulowitzki, who hit just his second home run of the season.  Clayton Kershaw, Jon Lester, and Ubaldo Jimenez dominated.  Let’s look at these stories and all the rest from yesterday’s games.

New York Mets Win Behind Raul Valdes' Strong Effort

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Trying to avoid a disastrous 1-7 road-trip, the Mets sent John Maine to the mound looking for a deep outing.

That didn't quite happen, but they got the result they wanted.

First off, in the first inning, the Mets got three runs on a bases loaded double by David Wright, who returned to the lineup after a day off.

In the Nationals first, that's where things got strange.
