Big Jim Thome Pulls Through: The White Sox Claim Home Opener, 4-2

White Sox fans, REJOICE!

It feels so good to actually be able to post that and have a proper meaning behind it. Worry not, this isn't some kind of a joke article about how to pass the time during the long season.

This is an article about the White Sox dramatic victory in their home opener against the Kansas City Royals, squeaking out a win right at the end of the game, coming behind Jim Thome's three-run blast into center field.

Mariners-Twins: Seattle Takes Season Opener

By now if you're reading this, it's likely that you know how the Twins lost, what went wrong, what could have went better, and everything in between. It was game one, and there are still 161 remaining.

With the heavily anticipated day now over, it's time to just focus on baseball and they'll start that tonight with Nick Blackburn against Erik Bedard.

Satchel Paige: Great Early and Great Late

Sometimes records don’t even begin to tell the whole story, and stats don’t scratch the surface.

Take the case of Leroy Robert “Satchel” Paige, legendary Negro Leaguer, Hall of Fame pitcher, and storyteller supreme.

Kansas City Royals Fans: Frustration Begins on Opening Day

And so it begins.

Already, Kansas City Royals fans have been dealt an early season blow by one of the players acquired in the offseason that was meant to bring depth to the Royals' bullpen.

It was one of the bright spots last year, often even cleaning up messes left by starters.

Gil Meche, the $55-million man pitched seven great innings. He struck out six, gave up seven hits, and walked zero.

Colorado Rockies Look To Rebound on the Mound

The Colorado Rockies are looking to rebound from their Opening Day loss in Arizona.

Toronto Blue Jays: Perfect Storm Brewing For Attendance Record?

On April 17, 1979, the Toronto Blue Jays—who, that year, would go on to set the franchise record for futility by losing 109 games—were 4-6. As were the Chicago White Sox, though they went on to finish the season at a slightly less miserable 73-89. Chicago won 6-1.

This meaningless game is only remembered for one reason: it was the worst attended game in Blue Jays history. A mere 10,074 people turned up, filling old Exhibition Stadium to not even a quarter of its reported capacity of 43,737. It may have snowed, it was certainly cold, and there was no roof.

Platooning and Left-Handed Hitters

John McGraw, the great New York Giants manager, and George Stallings, who managed the 1914 World Champion miracle Boston Braves, were two of the first managers to employ the "platoon" system.

The premise was that it was easier for a left-handed batter to hit a right-handed pitcher's breaking pitches, and for a right-handed batter to hit a left-hander's breaking pitches. The platoon system was utilized most successfully by Casey Stengel, who learned it from John McGraw when he played for the Giants in 1922 and 1923.

Cardinals-Pirates: Jason's Motte's Implosion Sends St. Louis to a Loss in Opener

I have to say, I love MLB Extra Innings. I may not get anything else done this spring/summer, but it is fun to get Cardinals baseball!

Of course, the big story of the day was Jason Motte's "implosion" in the ninth to blow the save and cost the Cardinals the game, 6-4. I'm not going to get into the melee on this one. He was too pumped up coming into the game, had a long inning in the bottom of the eighth where he was not sure whether to be throwing or not, and was just a bunch of nerves.

CC Sabathia is Overrated

I knew this would happen. I have been wanting to write a piece on how I thought CC Sabathia’s season last year was overrated, but haven’t gotten around to it.
After last night’s four-inning, six earned run performance, I knew I had to make time. I am a Yankee fan living in Canada, but I did not like the seven-year deal that the Yankees gave CC Sabathia.

I did not really understand the reasoning behind experts who were giving CC Sabathia Cy Young or MVP votes last season.

Johnny Damon's Catch: Where Was the Replay?

Major League Baseball instituted a new rule allowing the umpires to watch instant replays of controversial home run calls last season. I’m wondering if that rule has carried over into 2009.

Last season, Alex Rodriguez hit a home run that looked like it was easily fair at the time, but the umpires took an extra five minutes to check it out.
