Fantasy Baseball Early Round Sleepers

Since it is way too easy to throw out basement picks and hoping for a long shot to hit, let’s talk about two guys who should be considered first or second round talent but are going outside the top two rounds.

1. Chase Utley, (2B-PHI): Utley has been THE premier second baseman in baseball for the last four years. A couple of injuries set him back in the second half of last year, but he is back in top form to start the 2009 season.

Kevin Gregg Becomes Chicago Cubs New Closer

For everyone who picked Marmol in fantasy, the answer whether Marmol would be the closer is answered.  He will remain the setup man.

Kevin Gregg has been a monster during spring training, not allowing a single run.  Marmol on the other hand has struggled, having an ERA of 4.50.  What hurt Marmol was that he played in the WBC, while Gregg stayed and put out the show of his life.

David Price Versus Tom Hanson: Which Major Prospect Will Leave the Minors First?

“Prospect -- the act of looking forward; something that is awaited or expected”

Through the Wardrobe—A Fantasy Look at the Pitchers

In my previous piece, I said I tend to gloss over outfielders. If that's true (and it is), I flat out ignore pitching. Those of you looking for sturdy analysis of more than just the super-elite starters and closers should look elsewhere because I'm just going to hit the aces of the aces.

In other words, these are not the previews you're looking for (with a wave of my hand).

It should hopefully be a fun read though...

THE PITCHERS

Through the Wardrobe: A Fantasy Look at the Outfielders

It's time for another editorial shift before I finish up my fantasy approach to the 2009 Major League Baseball season. Having assessed the infielders, attention now moves to the outfielders and pitchers—two groups that I tend to dismiss to a degree, so my analysis will be a tad superficial.

I'll deal with the pitchers separately. Here, I'll focus on the guys roaming the big real estate.

Fantasy Baseball: Filling Out The Roster

While drafting a starting roster is eminently more important, how an owner uses their bench spots stands as a major piece to roster development. Strategy behind how to fill them varies, and can largely be dependent on your league settings.

In general, leagues are vastly becoming larger in size. This year, I'll be participating in leagues that have anywhere from 10 to 16 teams. The average seems to be about 12 teams in a given league. With that, there are only three to five spots on an average bench.
